Joy Ignites Success

Are you the one with long to do lists and infinite goals? The one who keeps going in the face of adversity? If so, I’m talking to you. You may be missing an important strategy in your arsenal. GIVING UP!
No, I don’t mean surrender or let go or anything new age or spiritual. I mean give up. Throw the blankets over your head, turn off the computer, your cell phone, and any other device and just give up. Cry if you want to. And for goodness sake, don’t judge yourself. There are plenty of others who will do that for you.

I went searching the other day for images of giving up. What did I find? Tons of images about never giving up, never quitting, and reasons to keep going. I don’t need reasons to keep going; those are abundant. But sometimes I need permission to stop, to quit, and to say the heck with it.
Are you appalled by my words? Do you live by the philosophy that there is always a silver lining and everything happens for a reason? This is not a contradiction of that belief. I am just saying that sometimes the best course of action is to completely and whole-heartedly throw in the towel. Admit to being at a loss. Admit to being exhausted. Admit to not wanting to go on. At least to yourself.
The constant pushing to do better, be more, and try harder; whether coming from internal or external voices takes an enormous toll on the system. Like a wind up toy that is over wound, we begin to fray at the edges. Our nerves feel shot, we tell everyone how stressed we are and yet, we still won’t stop.
Perhaps we’re afraid if we stop, we’ll never start again. Reminds me of a pin I have somewhere that says: “Ever stop to think and forget to start again?”
This is an irrational fear. It’s in our nature to move, to do, and to get things done. When we stop, give up, and throw in the towel, we are allowing time for the batteries to recharge. So next time you hear yourself saying “I need a vacation”, see what quitting for a few minutes (a few hours if you can) will do.

Please share with us what happens when you give yourself permission to give up.
